A TRAVEL GROUP VISIT TO CUBA, JANUARY 2007
The World Heritage Site of Trinidad
Twenty-five members travelled to Cuba, hoping to see this fascinating island before it is overtaken by “events”. They were not disappointed. Havana is a virtual museum, with fine Spanish Colonial buildings, many sadly in need of renovation; the way of life in much of the island seems not to have changed since the revolution nearly fifty years ago.
Museums to the Revolution were visited, with fighter planes, rockets, and boats from the struggle to overthrow Batista on display. Che Guevara was everywhere to be seen, depicted on tee shirts, postcards, murals, etc, but there was nothing similar depicting Fidel Castro. The beautiful Bay of Pigs, site of the unsuccessful invasion in 1961, was visited, along with the UNESCO designated World Heritage Site of Trinidad, Cienfuegos, and Che Guevara’s Mausoleum at Santa Clara. From beginning to end the visit was comprehensively educational and also most enjoyable.
